15 districts selected for Assam Floriculture Mission

Guwahati: The Assam Floriculture Mission will operate in 15 districts, which are selected on the basis of the availability of sizeable areas under flower cultivation for the first and second years.

The shortlisted districts are Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Nalbari, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong and Sonitpur.

The Directorate of Horticulture told Business-Northeast that the farmers were informed by their district units. The land of the farmers will be used for the mission. No separate land is allotted by the government to the farmers.

The proposed activities for the floriculture mission include area expansion from 2,200 ha to 3,288 ha over a period of three years; open and protected area cultivation, post-harvest management, value additions like establishment of agarbatti units and essential and aromatic oil production units. Special efforts will be made to develop wholesale market facilities and floriculture retail outlets.

An initial investment of Rs 150 crore will be made for the operation of the mission. According to the nodal officer of the mission, as high as 20,000 farmers will benefit from the mission.

The nodal officer in the Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing clarified that there is a deficit of Rs 120 crore of flowers annually. The value of the local production is Rs 15 crore annually (approximately).
