Centre imposes 20 percent export duty on rice.

The Centre has imposed a 20 per cent duty on the export on rice as poor rain in major rice-producing states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal has impacted the overall production of rice in the county.

According to a Finance Ministry notification, 20 percent in husk, husked rice and milled rice has been imposed which would be applicable from September 9.

The move would help rein in the prices of rice across the country.

The decision to impose a 20 per cent export duty on rice comes after wheat exports were banned in May.

Inadequate rainfall in rice-producing states has raised concerns about poor output, which has led to the imposition of export duty on the commodity.

The government has excluded parboiled and basmati rice from the export duty, but white and brown rice will draw the duty, which accounts for more than 60% per cent of India's exports.

India accounts for more than 40 per cent of global rice shipments and competes with Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and Myanmar in the world market.

India's rice exports touched a record 21.5 million tonnes in 2021, more than the combined shipments of the world's next four biggest exporters of the grain: Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and the United States.
