2nd North-East Regatta 2024 sets Sail at Umiam Sailing Club

Shillong: The 2nd North-East Regatta 2024 commenced amidst fanfare at the scenic Umiam Sailing Club (USC), Water sports Complex, Shillong, promising to exceed the success of its inaugural edition. With a lineup of over 100 participants from across the nation, including 106 sailors from 17 clubs spanning 10 classes, the event unfolds against the breathtaking backdrop of Umiam Lake.

Supported fervently by local communities and the government, the regatta emerges as a vibrant celebration of athleticism, sportsmanship, and the unyielding spirit of adventure. The opening ceremony, graced by Donald P Wahlang, IAS, Chief Secretary of the Government of Meghalaya, witnessed him lauding the regatta's elevation to a national ranking event. He extended gratitude to the Army officials for their invaluable support and highlighted the participation of Arjuna awardee Rajesh Chaudhary, poised to inspire the young competitors.

Wahlang underscored the state government’s role in establishing the club under the tourism department's purview, emphasizing its dual purpose: organizing sailing competitions and promoting Meghalaya as a premier tourist destination.

TSA Narayanan, Vice President of the Yachting Association of India (YAI), articulated the association’s vision to proliferate the sport to the district taluk level, aligning with the sports code.Organized in collaboration with USC, UDAY for Sailors Foundation, and YAI.
