3rd North-East India Buyer-Seller Meet Strengthens Trade Ties with South Asian Neighbors

Guwahati: The 3rd North-East India Buyer-Seller Meet, organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) North-East Initiative in association with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, took place today, continuing from the previous meet in 2022. The event focused on strengthening business ties between North-East India and neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Laos, Thailand, and Bhutan, given their significance in various sectors in the region.

In her welcome address, Atreyee Borooah Thekedath, Co-Chairperson, ICC Assam State Council, highlighted North East India's strategic position as the gateway to South Asia with 98 percentage international boundaries, emphasizing the region's vast trade and export opportunities. She expressed hope that such meets would foster closer connections between North-East entrepreneurs and neighboring countries' business communities.

The event was attented by Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs, graced the inaugural session as the Chief Guest. He underscored the interconnectedness of economic growth, safety, and security between the countries present. He shared details of ongoing Ministry of External Affairs projects, including irrigation in Nepal, hydro power in Bhutan, and skill development in Assam’s fisheries sector. He also emphasized the importance of green technologies for the region’s future economic growth, citing projects like the semiconductor plant in Assam that would attract more investors. 

The 3rd North-East India Buyer-Seller Meet in Guwahati focused on strengthening trade ties between North-East India and South Asian neighbors, with key discussions on agriculture, textiles, and green technologies.

The event was attended by key figures like Longki Phangcho and Tenzing Norbu Thongdok, Members of the North Eastern Council, and representatives from Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Thailand, including diplomats and industry leaders. The Buyer-Seller Meet aimed to provide a platform for national and international companies to discuss business opportunities, particularly in sectors like agriculture, handloom, textiles, food processing, medicinal plants, tourism, and IT. A total of 60 buyers from the focus countries and 200 sellers from North-East India participated.

The event also saw the signing of several expressions of interest between North-East exporters and foreign buyers.
