The Minister said that the domestically developed set of 5G standards, called 5Gi, has been approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3GPP, and made part of the global 5G standards.

Development of 5G stack:

At the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) regional standardisation forum, organized on August 8, Chauhan said, "Our engineers have developed a set of 5G standards which will facilitate the spread of 5G networks in rural areas…these standards have been approved by the ITU and 3GPP and made part of 5G standards."

The 5Gi standard is a 5G Radio Interface Technology (RIT) for enhanced coverage across rural, remote and urban areas. Telecom gear makers and operators in India had opposed the standard, flagging interoperability issues and said it would create an additional burden for 5G deployment.

According to sources, the national standard will be amalgamated into 3GPP's 5G standards. 3GPP is the global body that provides standards and specifications for telecommunications technologies.

About the project:

Moreover, Chauhan added that as many as 175,000 have been given optical fiber while around 560,000 villages have 4G connectivity. The government has also outlined a multi-billion dollar comprehensive plan to ensure optical fiber and mobile communications in all 600,000 villages by 2025.

Chauhan also said that the Government is promoting indigenously designed, developed and manufactured advanced telecom technology. "As a result, India today has a strong home-grown 5G mobile communications ecosystem," he said.

The Minister of State added that 5G mobile services will roll out in the country in about a month, which will have multiplier effects on the development of all sectors.
