Guwahati: The Assam Khadi and Village Industries Board (AKVIB) has already sold 5,500 tricolours for the Republic Day from its target of 10,000 flags.

The Board had set a target of 10,000 flags for sale on the occasion of the 74th Republic Day and the production started on Independence Day last year.

According to the officials of Khadi and Village Industries Limited, people bought many flags on Independence Day. As the quality of the flag is very good so they can easily reuse the same flag on the occasion of Republic Day, they informed.

A large part of the demand for flags was from educational institutes and offices of deputy commissioners. The officials said while the DC office of Kamrup Rural ordered 170 flags, that of Kamrup Metro asked for 20-22.

The flags are of various sizes and prices. Tricolours of 9-12 feet are priced at Rs 4,200, 6-9 feet are Rs 3,150 and 6-4 feet are Rs 750. There are smaller versions too — 3-4.5 feet are priced at Rs 550, 2-3 feet are Rs 300, car flags are Rs 90 and the smallest flags of 1.5-2.5 feet are Rs 170.

AKVIB generates up to Rs 1 crore in revenue annually. There are 41 Khadi production centres, of which 19 have placed sales units around the state, and one of which is in Kolkata.

The maximum demand for national flags emerges on Independence Day, Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti.
