Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has cleared the rules for giving Right of Way (RoW) to telecom equipment in order to guarantee that the 5G rollout happens quickly. So far, Airtel and Jio have both introduced 5G network services in Assam. However, a strong system must exist in order to guarantee that 5G is present throughout the complete territory with no gaps. To that end, the Assam Government has authorised the rules for giving rights of way (RoW) to telecom firms and infrastructure suppliers so they can construct telecom infrastructure in the state.

Highlights of the rules that have been authorised include a single window approval for 5G RoW applications, a provision for the use of street furniture for the deployment of small cells, and merging of Assam RoW applications with the Central Gatishakti Sanchar Portal for 5G purposes.

The other guidelines, according to PTI report, include provisions for the placement of poles on which small cells and overground cables can be placed, as well as the framework of fees for different RoW components and a revenue-sharing scheme among the stakeholders. Industry organisations, including the Cellular Operator Association of India (COAI) and others, have pushed for state governments to embrace the national RoW standards in order to facilitate a quicker 5G deployment across the nation.

As previously stated, 5G services from Airtel and Jio are currently available in Assam. The introduction and spread of 5G in the state would be advantageous to businesses and customers alike.
