Assam Floods 2025: Widespread Devastation and Economic Impact

Assam is contending with plain flooding activated by persistent monsoon rains and the announcement of water from the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation's (NEEPCO) Ranganadi dam. The hardship has claimed at least 10 lives and affected over 400,000 inhabitants across 17 districts, with Lakhimpur being the toughest hit. 

Lakhimpur District: Epicenter of the Crisis 

In Lakhimpur, the Ranganadi River flooded following the release of water from NEEPCO's Panyor Hydro Electric Plant in Arunachal Pradesh. The subsequent floods flooded 243 villages, breached embankments, and cut off National Highway 15, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. Critical infrastructure, including Pohumora High School and the Phumora-Kimin regional road, has been flooded, worrying connectivity with neighbouring regions.

Statewide Influence

The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries have surpassed danger levels, plunging 175 villages across 12 districts. Over 78,000 people have been expatriate, with many seeking refuge in relief camps. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reported important injury to homes, roads, and agricultural land. 

Economic Costs

The floods have overwhelmed Assam's agricultural economy. Thousands of hectares of paddy fields and vegetable farms have been flooded, wiping out crops crucial to the local economy and food security. The ruin of fertile land worsens poverty and food anxiety in the region.

Government Response

Rescue operations are underway, with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local establishments working untiringly to empty stuck residents.
