Guwahati: The Assam government has inked an MoU with at least three companies to develop high-performance sports training and rehabilitation facilities in two of the state’s major towns.

The centres would be built in Jorhat and Guwahati.

Oil India Limited (OIL), Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) and Abhinav Futuristics Private Limited (AFL) are the three businesses with whom the MoU was signed.

“Sports have become extremely competitive in our nation. The only person who is technically proficient and physically fit will be able to prevail in any race… We have focused as much as possible on how to operate the centre. We also included a five-year contract for managing the centre as part of the overall project. The high-performance training centre will be outsourced, and AFL will manage it for five years,” said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“If, after five years, we are able to manage it alone, we will do so; if not, we will ask for the foundation's support in further developing it,” he added.

The facility will house all sports disciplines under one roof, assisting all athletes in improving their physical fitness and skill as they work towards greatness. The MoU was inked at Janata Bhawan on Thursday in Guwahati where Sarma and Minister of Cultural Affairs Bimal Borah were present.
