A batch of Tea produced by the Mokalbari Tea Estate in eastern Assam, was sold at the auctions in Kolkata for Rs 22,000 per kg on August 10 by Paramount Tea Marketing.

The tea was bought by Kolkata-based Bhansali and Company for its Russian buyer Masterskaya of Tea.

According to Mokalbari Tea Estate Director Ajay Jalan, they usually export such high-valued specialties to Europe directly and rarely sell through the auction market.

Jalan also said that such products are handmade from a special cultivar of tea. However, after the introduction of the product they received pretty good reviews from the buyers.

It is to be noted that the price fetched by the tea is the highest received from the Kolkata auction market so far.

" We have to tread cautiously in the export market due to the changing geo-political situation" he says.

" Fifty percent of my production is orthodox tea and we export mainly to Europe" he said.

He is looking for better prices in the auction after the export commitments are over.
