Guwahati: The Assam government will invest Rs 1000 crore in sports facilities under the revamped Integrated Sports Policy, which will take into effect from 2023.

Notably, the first integrated sports policy, adopted in 2018, will expire on December 31, 2022.

In response to a query from Business Northeast on the government's stance on the new integrated sports strategy, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that discussions are ongoing with all stakeholders to ensure the holistic growth of sports in the state.

"We will shortly finalise the new integrated policy, and there will be an enhanced focus on creating sports infrastructure in the states, notably stadiums," Sarma added.

Sarma went on to say that the government has set aside Rs 1000 crore for investment in the sports industry over the next five years and that the new integrated sports strategy would be intended to meet the state's sports infrastructure needs.

He stated that at least ten sports complexes will be built at the district level. Each of the sports facilities would cost roughly Rs 50 crore to build.
Furthermore, multifunctional stadiums will be erected in each of Assam's 40 assembly constituencies at a cost of roughly Rs 12 crore.

It should be noted that the previous BJP administration in the state implemented the first integrated sports policy in the state in 2018 and revised it to award-successful state athletes for performance in international sports. Boxer Hema Burogohain and sprinter Hima Das have been promoted to DSP in the Assam police force.
