Symbica is developing a customizable and low cost affordable prosthetic arm which will allow amputees to do their day to day tasks. Symbica has two founders, engineers Nilotpal Baruah, 28 and Sandhan Sarma,31 both alumni of Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology. The idea came in the mind of Nilotpal Baruah when he thought to modify his final year college project, an artificial hand into prosthetics start-up along with the expertise of Sandhan Sarma who also made a robotic hand as his final year project.

Assam startup nest gave a shape to their idea

After completing their Btech rather than settling for a job both Nilotpal and Sandhan took up the high risk to move their idea forward. At that time Assam Start- Up Nest started their incubation center and COHORT which helped them to understand the concept of startup and business model and gave a formal structure to Symbica.

What makes Symbica different?

While creating the product they stumbled upon many problems, one of which was using a single motor for a hand which is their patented technology. Traditional prosthetics hand uses 5 motors to operate however Symbica uses a single medical grade motor to operate. This is their key idea which helped them to make their prosthetics affordable. In comparison with traditional prosthetics the sockets are rigid but the socket of Symbica is being incorporated with self adapting technology with the help of which the socket can automatically adapt to the shape of the residual stamp which helps the amputee to use the prosthetic arm at ease. Biofeedback, repeated wearability and low noise interference are a few premium features offered by Symbica at a reasonable price.

The prosthetics market in India is dominated by big giants. The technology which the big giants use are obsolescent and simple in nature and also comes with a hefty price tag. On the other hand Symica is very affordable and is using new technology and since they are new and starting up they have the advantage of agility which helps them to incorporate new technology as their supply chain is small as compared to big giants.

Launch and Price

Symbica is all set to launch their first product in late 2022 and they already have pre orders of more than 30 from the NGOs of Guwahati itself. And their expected sales after launch is 200-300 annually from the state of Assam itself. Since their scalability is less being a new start up, their capacity to manufacture is minimal. To increase their scalability in the near future in accordance with the demand , they are also in talks with private investors. The basic version of Symbica will launch at a price between 50,000 to 100000 INR in late 2022.
