Guwahati: Assam Government has decided to stop the municipal water supply system accessible for household supply under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), in areas where 'JICA' project water delivery was earlier launched.

Following the success of the trial water supply system put in place by the Guwahati Water Board, it was decided to stop providing water.

Guwahati Water Board (GWB) has made this choice in light of the challenges people encounter in accessing clean and safe drinking water as a result of the municipal corporation's antiquated and frequent water delivery system failures.

As the majority of households have not yet filed for a residential drinking water connection under the new system, the Guwahati Water Board (GWB) has urged the residents of these regions to take advantage of the new system. The choice was made today during a board meeting held in Housing and Urban Affairs and Irrigation Minister Ashok Singhal's office at Janata Bhawan.

With representatives from the Guwahati Water Board, Mission Flood Free Guwahati, Urban Infrastructure Investment Programme, Directorate of Urban and Rural Planning, GMC, GMDA, Irrigation, and other departments, Minister Singhal evaluated the projects in ten different sessions.

In order to best serve the needs of the public, Minister Singhal also encouraged the Guwahati Water Board to make it feasible for payments for new household drinking water connections to be paid on an instalment basis wherever possible.
