Guwahati: The Bhumi Pujan to mark the commencement of construction of the North East Gas Grid Project in Sikkim was done on July 7 at Pakyong in the presence of Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

The North East Gas Grid (NEGG), a project worth about Rs 9,265 crore, will be connected to the National Gas Grid to ensure the supply of natural gas to all the northeastern states. The Siliguri- Gangtok section of the pipeline will be 197 km, out of which 47 km will fall in Sikkim commencing from the Reshi Border and terminating at Ranipool near Saramsa garden. In Sikkim, the pipeline will traverse all along NH 717A.

Welcoming the guests, Atindra Roy Choudhury, Chairman of Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL), said the NEGG project will not only make natural gas available for residential, commercial and industrial uses but also bring a major boost to the economic development of the northeastern region, including Sikkim.

Appreciating the support received from the government and its various departments and agencies, Roy Choudhury reaffirmed IGGL’s commitment to implementing the project as per the Centre’s Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 without any time and cost overrun.
Acharya assured all support for the project and stressed the need for natural gas for keeping the environment clean with hardly any carbon emissions.

Dr Ajit Kumar Thakur, CEO of IGGL, expressed great enthusiasm about this significant milestone, stating, “Let us work together towards the successful implementation of the NEGG project, aligned with our shared goals/missions, to reduce the carbon footprint and create a cleaner and healthier environment for the people of Sikkim.”
