The Centre on Wednesday approved the National Logistics Policy that aims at reducing transportation costs and improving the worldwide performance of the sector.

The policy was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week and seeks to cut transportation costs by promoting the seamless movement of goods across the country.

The Prime Minister specifically stressed that from the current 13-14 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, the country should aim to bring the logistics costs to a single digit as soon as possible.

The National Logistics Policy aims to decrease the logistic cost in India as compared to global costs by 2030.

India’s rank in the index was 44th in 2018. There is a plan to create a data-driven decision support mechanism for an efficient logistics ecosystem. The Prime Minister envisioned placing India among the top 25 countries by 2030.

Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur stated that the policy will use the existing institutional framework of the Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) to monitor its implementation. The group was created under the Pradhan Mantri Gatishakti national master plan.

The EGOs will also set up a Services Improvement Group on the pattern of a network planning group for monitoring parameters pertaining to processes, and regulatory and digital improvements in the logistics sector. Additional focus will be on enabling adequate development of warehouses, promotion of standards, digitization and automation across the logistics value chain, and better track and trace mechanisms.

Some of the important initiatives under the policy include the Unified Logistics Interface Platform, the Ease of Logistics Services platform, and the e-handbook on warehousing.

Across India, fourteen states have already developed their respective logistics policies and in thirteen states it is at the draft stage.

Commenting on the policy, Arshdeep Singh Mundi, Managing Director, Jujhar Logistics, said that it is a significant step towards strengthening the logistics sector using the integration of efficient measures.

The Assam Government had confirmed to approve a new policy to turn the state into a logistic hub. In the recent Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma approved the Assam Logistics Policy, 2022, under which a dedicated logistics division headed by a secretary-rank officer will be set up.
