The Tripura Government has dedicated a street for street food vendors in a bit to ensure safe, well cooked and hygienic food in roadside outlets.

The stretch from Battala to Paradise Chowmuhani in Agartala has been dedicated for the purpose. It has been discussed in a conference held at Tuberculosis Association in the city.

All Street vendors who put up stall in that section will be checked and certified by the Tripura State Government.

"All the food makers have to take extra precautions. The food should be cooked to maintain hygiene. We have taken the initiative to build confidence among the people who have a taste for street foods and can take the food from these stalls without any hesitation", said District Magistrate (DM), West Tripura, Debapriya Bardhan while announcing its initiative.

Street foods, despite conquering a good market; questions have often been raised on its quality and hygiene from time-to-time.

The level of sugar, fat and salt found in most of the street food items have been found to be more dangerous than anywhere else, often being the cause of severe health complications. The action of the Tripura Government has thus been welcomed by street food lovers.

The occasion was embraced by Health Secretary Debashish Basu and Director of Health and Family Welfare Radha Debbarma. “Several people love to take street foods but most of the time just thinking hygiene they avoid it. Now, the state government has taken the initiative to certify the street food stalls that are safe. With this, the vendors who have their temporary stalls installed in the Battala to Paradise road will get documented and they have to follow some prescriptions from the departments", Basu stated.

The decision has come at the time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced about the opening of online platform for street food vendors on the lines of big restaurants in Bhopal.
