Centre approves extension of urban housing scheme till December 2024

In a bid to provide monetary help for the completion of already sanctioned 122.69 lakh houses till March 31, 2022 the Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi approves extension of urban housing scheme till December 2024.

Extension of urban housing scheme:

The proposal for the date extension of the urban housing scheme was approved on August 10 along with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for the continuation of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U).

As per statement by the Government 102 lakh houses have been grounded/under construction against original project demand. Out of the mentioned number of houses 62 lakhs of the same has been completed. However, the proposal of another 40 lakh houses received late during the last two years of the scheme from the states or UTs which require another two years to complete them.

Funding:

The statement further stated that a total amount of Rs 1,18,020.46 crore has been released as fund and Rs 85,406 crore will be released as central assistance or subsidy till December 31, 2024.

It said, “The continuation of the scheme based on the request of states or UTs till December 31, 2024 will help in completion of already sanctioned houses under BLC, AHP and ISSR verticals."

The scheme covers the urban areas as per Census 2011 and towns notified at a subsequent time including advance planning or development areas. While the Centre provides financial assistance, state governments or UT administrations implement the scheme including selection of beneficiaries.

About PMAY-U scheme:

The PMAY-U was launched back in 2015. It is one of the flagship programs which is being implemented by the Centre to provide all-weather pucca houses to all eligible beneficiaries in urban areas throughout the country.
