First international importer-exporter meet at Indo-Bangla border

 Exchange of ideas at meet held in Dawki in Meghalaya

Guwahati: The Indo-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) delegates met for the first International Exporter-Importer Meet 2023 in Dawki, Meghalaya, on Saturday.

An IBCCI official told Business North East that the 19-member IBCCI delegation was headed by its president, Abdul Matlub Ahmad

The initiative for the first international exporter-importer meet was jointly undertaken by the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) Dawki, the central government and Meghalaya’s department of industries and commerce, in partnership with the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

Apart from 60 delegates froumm Bangladesh and 35 delegates from Bhutan, officials, exporters, and farmers’ collectives from the Northeast also attended the meeting.

“This platform has been helpful in mapping out opportunities and barriers towards diversification of the trade basket," Secretary of India Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) S. M. Abdul Kalam Azad said. “A roadmap for action along with follow-up efforts has been chalked out.”

Three memorand of understanding (MoU) were signed between farmer collectives in Meghalaya and the IBCCI delegation for increasing cross-border trade.

During this meeting, buses were announced to ply between LPA Dawki and the nearest public transit points to ease incoming tourist movement from Bangladesh.

“There was display of products of each country at LPAI Dawki and at Tamabil to plug the information asymmetry of opportunities for diversification," an official informed.

“The event culminated with a fresh commitment to resolving logistics impediments and increasing trade for regional prosperity," said the Secretary.
