Assam government is mulling to launch a government app-based taxi service under the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC).

A 15-member committee has been formed to look into the feasibility of starting such an app-based service for the government and a decision on it will be taken within a fortnight after the committee submits its report.

Assam Transport Minister Parmial Suklabaidya is taking an active interest in starting the government app-based service amid the crisis over App-based cab services like Ola and Uber. As a pilot project, the app-based service will be first started in Guwahati.

Notably, the plan of launching an App-based taxi service in Guwahati by the Assam government follows many complaints from passengers and also drivers.

While the passengers have been complaining about the behaviour of the cab drivers, the drivers, on the other hand, have been complaining about the application aggregators and the high percentage of commission charged by the aggregators.

Many passengers in Guwahati have been complaining about the sky-touching fares by cab services like Ola and Uber.

It may be mentioned that after issuing a stern warning to cab associations and ride-hailing platforms such as Ola, Uber, Rapido, and Peindia, a meeting was held earlier under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha with representatives of these companies and the Owners' Association, wherein, various issues and complications related to the cab services was discussed.

In the said meeting, several resolutions have been taken to provide better and hassle-free cab service to the passengers.
