Guwahati: Guwahati Smart City Limited's integrated traffic management system (ITMS) will be operational by August 2022.

Officials of Smart City Limited informed Business Northeast that work is being undertaken in full swing to make the first phase of the system operational before August 15.

"We have set a target to complete the first phase before Independence Day. This phase covers the entire GS Road," the official said.

After years of delay, Guwahati Smart City Limited has started work proactively on several projects across the city, which include the setting up of the ITMS. Installation work started in April to install the system at 21 junctions along GS Road, from Khanapara to Nepali Mandir. Alongside automated traffic lights, each junction will be equipped with cameras, and speed sensors.

The overall integrated traffic management system will be installed at 94 junctions in Guwahati, as listed by Assam Police; the remaining to be undertaken in a phased manner.

Additionally, 10 more speed sensor cameras will be installed at different lanes across the city. The project is being outsourced to the Gaziabad-based Technosys Security Systems Private Limited.

The Command and Control Centre of the traffic management system will be installed on the second floor of the DCP Central Office at Ulubari which will be secured with an Access Control system from Honeywell and Wireless Fire Alarm System from Halma designed by Trisim Global Solutions. The overall estimated cost of the project is Rs. 78 crores.

"More than 1,000 Cameras from Honeywell will be installed along with an Adaptive Traffic Control System. The speed sensors will be set with the permitted speed limit, and any vehicle overspeeding will be detected immediately. The cameras will also include Red Light Violation Detection System, No Helmet Detection, Triple Riding Detection, Driver on Phone Detection, and No Seat Belt Detection. These will be monitored in the Command and Control Centre and penalties will be levied directly against the registration number," SCL informed.

"We are also planning to set up public announcement systems at selected junctions and violators will be alerted immediately. The idea is not to earn revenue, but to ensure a safe and accident-free Guwahati.

"The data collected from the cameras and sensors will be stored in Cloud and Fibres are installed to back the entire system. Steps are being taken for the proper preservation of data even if there are sudden glitches or cuts in the cables. Cloud computing from Meity-approved Cloud Service Provider and bandwidth from Reliance Jio will also ensure the project is deployed quickly, and scalable for the future," the official added.

The targeted date of completion of the entire project is 17 March 2023. The implementing agency will hold the responsibility for the maintenance of the entire system for 5 years thereafter.

Guwahati Smart City Limited stated that all deconstructions that are done on the GS Road for installation of the traffic management system will be re-engineered as required and reconstructed by the PWD (Roads) subsequently.

The GSCL is also proactively working on the projects, especially the much-hyped Brahmaputra riverside beautification project, under which about 1.2 kilometers from Kachari to the DC Bungalow will be developed by 2025.
