Guv issues ordinance to amend Motor Vehicle Taxation Act

Guwahati: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has issued an ordinance to amend the Assam Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, 1936, resulting in increased taxes for both four-wheelers and two-wheelers in the state.

The newly released notification, the ordinance will be known as the Assam Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, and will come into immediate effect.

As per the revised proposal, four-wheelers worth Rs 3 lakh will be taxed at 4.5% while those priced between Rs 3-10 lakh will face a 7% tax. For cars priced between Rs 10-20 lakh, the tax rate will be 10% and those above Rs 20 lakh will be taxed at 14% of the vehicle’s cost.

Similarly, two-wheelers costing up to Rs 1 lakh will be subject to a 6% tax, while those priced between Rs 1-3 lakh will face an 8% tax. Two-wheelers above Rs 3 lakh will be taxed at 9%.
