The tourism strip between Guwahati and Bangkok remains sparkling, with airport officials settling no significant decline in travel bookings despite the recent earthquake. The number of travellers flying from Guwahati to Bangkok has held stable, clearing fears that the earthquake would impact travel designs from Northeast India, according to the data received from officials of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati.

“It is the same as before. There's no change,” an LGBIA official told Business North East (BNE). Reportedly, a strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Bangkok on March 28, 2025, which caused significant damage and casualties, including the collapse of a high-rise building under construction, the videos of which went viral on social media platforms.

The incident caused fear and concern among travellers, particularly families and solo travellers. “Despite initial anxieties, we have not observed any drop in demand for Bangkok-bound flights,” said the official from the Guwahati airport, who further mentioned that passenger traffic remains steady, particularly with the upcoming summer holiday season.

Guwahati-Bangkok: A Growing International Link

Guwahati, often mentioned as the gateway to Northeast India, has increasingly located itself as a centre for international travel. Among its most popular overseas destinations is Bangkok, a city that mixtures culture, cuisine, shopping, and medical tourism. Leisure travellers and those seeking sensible medical arrangements and wellness use this route frequently.

Flights from Guwahati to Bangkok typically take around 10 to 15 hours, depending on the route. While Thai AirAsia operates direct services that meaningfully reduce travel time, other airlines like IndiGo and Air India Express offer linking options with layovers in cities such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, or Kolkata.

The aerial distance between the two cities is around 1,649 kilometres.

With about 35 flights working each week, travellers have various scheduling options. Eight airlines currently service this route, safeguarding elastic and economical pricing.

Airfare and Booking Insights

One of the biggest draws for travellers is the affordability of the route. Ticket prices for a one-way journey start as low as Rs 10,784, with round-trip options often providing even better deals. Budget-conscious travellers are encouraged to book early and consider travelling during the shoulder seasons to avoid peak prices.

Travel portals such as MakeMyTrip, Skyscanner, and airline websites offer tools to monitor fare variations and seat obtainability. “Usually, any disruption—even minor—can affect short-term travel plans,” said a Guwahati-based travel agent.

“But in this case, the impact has been insignificant. Bangkok remains a go-to destination for many from the Northeast,” added the official.

Tourism Resilience

Thailand’s tourism industry is known for its quick recovery and crisis management. And this event has been no exception. Public advisories from the Thai tourism authority are grateful to international tourists as all major facilities have been running normally, and no tourist zones were affected by the quake.

As international travel rebounds post-pandemic, the Guwahati-Bangkok sector stands out as a model of resilience. The continued demand proves strong traveller sureness and the appeal of Thailand as a reliable international terminus.
