Guwahti: Visiting the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati at the turn of the year has become a ritual among families. The trend was witnessed again this year as over 14,000 people who visited the zoo on December 31, 2023, and January 1, 2024, shelled out almost Rs 4 lakh for tickets.

"The number of visitors we had on December 31 and January 1 was as high as 14, 850. The total revenue generated was Rs.3,83,350 during those days", the zoo director Ashwini Kumar shared with Business North East.

Kumar revealed that zoo authorities made special preparations during those two days to ensure easier movement for the visitors. "We sought help from traffic police, forest officials, NCC scouts and guide cadets, and hospitals to ensure that everything went smoothly despite the rush", explained Kumar.

“We need a very good workforce during that time, so management must be very good”, said the director.

The Assam State Zoo, opened to the public in 1958, is located in the Hengrabari Reserve Forest in Guwahati and occupies an area of 175 hectares which includes the botanical garden spread across an area of 82 hectares. The zoo comprises a diversity of varied flora and fauna species and houses more than 112 species in all. Owing to its rich fauna, the Assam State Zoo is popularly known as the "green Lung" of Guwahati city.

The zoo is set to get a major facelift in the coming years as Rs 350 crores has been sanctioned for the purpose by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of the state.
