Guwahati: HDFC Bank and Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) have joined hands on a solid waste management project for the fast-growing capital of Assam. The project also has the Centre for Environment Education as a partner and Shrishti Waste Management Services Pvt Ltd has been appointed the service provider.

The tech-savvy solid waste sorting facility that HDFC calls a material recovery facility (or MRF) is being set up in Guwahati’s Adabari area. It uses technology to sort waste more effectively and recover valuable resources from mixed waste streams, HDFC officials said.

The facility will segregate all types of dry waste, including plastic, and is expected to contribute to the waste supply chain. The project will follow The Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and its further amendments and use machinery for various operations.

“This systems approach unfolds many aspects of swachhta, including, improved inclusivity of safai mitras, digital analysis of waste typology, self-driven collection systems, optimization of expenditures apart from generating jobs with better incomes, and integrating the informal sector into the formal workforce,” Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal, who inaugurated the project digitally, said during the ceremony.

“Our effort to promote circular economy and a business model across the waste management value chain through this project includes partnerships with stakeholders and initiatives to educate the community on sustainable practices”, said a senior HDFC official.

The machinery’s processes will follow ‘The Solid Waste Management Rules 2016’ and its amendments. Different types of machinery, including movable weighing bridge, conveyor belt, air blower, shredder, grinder, and bailing, have been installed for various operations at the facility.
