Guwahati: The Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati handled around 56 lakh (5.6 million) passengers in 2023. In contrast, the figure was about 4.6 million in 2022.

While about 2.9  million of those passengers were arrivals, about 2.7 million were departures, the airport authority said in a statement on January 3.

"We are happy that in the recent calendar year 2023, we have exceeded the previous year's passengers' number by 10 lakh", remarked LGBI CAO Utpal Baruah, adding that the growth of 17% "is one of the highest in the country."

"We are happy because we could handle this volume in a terminal that has less than half passenger handling capacity", Baruah added. "We are waiting eagerly to commission the new terminal this year that has double capacity than our current demand. We have Jaipur, Bhubaneswar and Bangkok connectivity this year and [are] working a few more domestic and international destinations in this year. "

The Guwahati Airport in 2023 handled about 46,600 aircraft - about 23,300 arriving and about 23,300 departures. In 2022, the number was about 41,000.

In 2023, the airport was connected to Jaipur and Bhubaneswar in India while international connectivity was extended to Bangkok in Thailand.

The airport handled 19,290 passengers on December 24, the highest during the entire year.
