Guwahati: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati is on the verge to develop a remote ignition with pilot burner flame detection system prototype for the company's Duliajan facility in Assam. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian Institute of Technology Guwahat and Oil India.

Prof. T.G. Sitharam, Director of IIT Guwahati, stated at the event, "The unique remote all-weather ignition and flare detection system being developed by IIT Guwahati for OIL, Duliajan would assure the ignition of the low pressure gases through the close loop intelligent control circuit."

"The suggested technology would give a safer choice by replacing manual fire igniting systems at ageing OIL producing sites," Sitharam stated. The main goal of this project is to swap out the unsafe manual fire igniting systems for safer automation fire ignition systems at outdated Oil India production facilities. IIT Guwahati designed and created a Pilot Burner prototype for this project.

For all flares, a pilot burner with a remote igniting mechanism is recommended to ensure constant ignition of flare gases.

The new technology, which will be created by researchers at IIT Guwahati, would guarantee constant burner system monitoring and light the burners on their own when the flame is extinguished.

This system will be sufficiently shielded to offer all-weather resistance and to guarantee its dependability and durability.
A control unit will be created to coordinate the detecting and igniting systems. It is possible to convert the system to manual mode in the case of an abnormality, and an emergency shutdown should also be planned.

Prof. Sisir Kumar Nayak (Lead PI), Prof. Harshal B. Nemade from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and Prof. Bishnupada Mandal from the Department of Chemical Engineering are all IIT Guwahati researchers that are working on this project.
