India’s marine product exports record an all-time high in FY 2021-22

Guwahati: Despite the odds, India shipped 13,69,264 MT of seafood worth Rs 57,586.48 crore (USD 7.76 billion) during 2021–22.

 K N Raghavan, Chairman of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), stated that despite several challenges in its major export markets caused by the Covid pandemic, India managed to achieve all-time high in exports worth US$ 7.76 billion with a volume of 13,69,264 MT of seafood.

During the fiscal years 2021–22, exports increased by 31.71 percent in rupee terms, 30.26 percent in USD terms, and 19.12 percent in quantity terms. India exported 11,49,510 MT of seafood worth Rs 43,720.98 crore in 2020-21. (USD 5,956.93 million).

In terms of quantity and value, frozen shrimp remained the most important export item. Frozen shrimp earned Rs 42,706.04 crore (USD 5,828.59 million), accounting for 53.18 percent of total dollar earnings and 75.11 percent of total quantity earned. During the period, shrimp exports increased by 31.68 percent in USD value and 23.35 percent in quantity.

The total frozen shrimp export during 2021-22 was estimated to be 7,28,123 MT. The United States imported the most frozen shrimp (3,42,572 MT), followed by China (1,25,667 MT), the European Union (90,549 MT), South East Asia (44,683 MT), Japan (38,492 MT), and the Middle East (37,158 MT). The value of frozen shrimp exports has increased in all markets.
