Manipur launches helicopter service to connect Imphal-Ukhrul

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh inaugurated a new Imphal-Ukhrul-Imphal route under the Manipur Heli in a virtual ceremony held at the Chief Minister’s secretariat on Monday. Notably, Ukhrul is part of the hill region of Manipur that comprises of four other districts - Senapati, Tamenglong, Churachandpur, and Chandel.

Alongside the route inauguration, district transport offices were also launched in 5 districts- Pherzawl, Kakching, Noney, Kamjong, and Jiribam, in a push towards enhancing connectivity and transportation service in the conflict-hit region.

The Manipur Heli Service, which commenced operations in September 2018 under the 75:25 subsidy scheme, has flown around 31,163 passengers and has been pivotal in emergency relief, rescue operations, and medical evacuations.

Expanding its reach, new routes were introduced in 2023, including Imphal-Churachanpur, Imphal to Aizwal via Churachanpur, Imphal to Lairounching, and Imphal to Dimapur via Lairouching.

The Home Ministry has announced subsidized fares for several routes, making air travel more accessible for the residents.

Notably, the fare for the newly launched Imphal-Ukhrul route is set at Rs 2500 and Rs 2000, as per media reports.
