In a significant development, a state-of-the-art multi- and super-speciality hospital is all set to be established in Guwahati soon. Around Rs 500 crore will be invested in building Medanta – The Medicity near Lokhra on National Highway 27, which is close to the Sarusajai Stadium. The hospital is likely to become operational three years from now.
While speaking to Business North East (BNE), Medanta Hospital Chairman Rajiv Parakh confirmed the land acquisition and outlined the construction timeline.
“I would want it to be open as soon as possible. Since we have just acquired the land, the construction could take about three years. However, with the speed and intensity with which we operate, we aim to begin services within that time frame,” said Parakh.
Moreover, the hospital will offer advanced treatments, including liver, kidney, heart, and lung transplants. Procedures such as aortic aneurysm repairs, lung and leg clot removal, and kidney replacement will also be available. Parakh further revealed the hospital will incorporate the latest computer-assisted and artificial intelligence-assisted technologies, aiming to deliver cutting-edge care to patients across the northeastern region.
“AI-assisted technologies will be part of all major departments. The goal is to provide the best possible healthcare services to the people of the Northeast without requiring them to travel outside the region,” stated Parakh.
Highlighting the increasing prevalence of diabetes in the region, Dr. Parakh said that the Northeast faces a high incidence of diabetes-related complications, as indicated by reports from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). These include heart attacks, strokes, and peripheral arterial disease, leading to limb ischemia and gangrene.
“We are particularly focused on preventing amputations. With advanced vascular procedures, including atherectomy—a technique to remove arterial blockages without using stents—we aim to reduce the number of limb-loss cases,” said the Chairman.

While the costs for advanced treatments are currently high, Parakh noted that increasing accessibility to new technologies would drive prices down over time.
“We are conscious of affordability. As these technologies become more widespread, they will become more cost-effective. Medanta will continue to evaluate cost and access to ensure treatment is within reach for the common people of the Northeast,” said Parakh.
Medanta also plans to involve and train local doctors and medical professionals to build local healthcare capacity. “Our ethos is to work closely with local talent. They will be trained and integrated into the hospital, which not only builds local capacity but also reduces operational costs,” he added.
Apart from treatment, the new hospital in Guwahati will generate employment opportunities, support skill development, and reduce patient outflow to metro cities for high-end treatment while promoting healthcare tourism.
