Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the Chief Minister’s Solar Mission, which proposes incorporating Sustainable Green Energy in the state.

The proposal was approved on June 6. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told the media after the meeting that the idea of the mission is to have sustainable green energy and also be part of the energy mix.

“Government will subsidize certain percentage of the scheme to different house units in rural & urban areas and institutional units through the scheme. CMSM entails power systems with solar hybrid technology wherein photovoltaic cells, an inverter and battery backup will be provided to households and institutions availing the scheme. This will allow some sort of stability in power in the long run,” Sangma tweeted.

He informed that the government will roll out the mission within the next month.

This becomes important at a time when the state is suffering from an acute power shortage. On the same day, Sangma said the state had to shell out Rs 100 crore on purchasing power if the present situation continued for another 100 days. He added that the government is already spending Rs 3 crore on power every day.
