Guwahati: Meghalaya Government is likely to implement the Automative Indian Standard (AIS)-140 standard Global Positioning System (GPS)-based vehicle tracking system with the help of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) due to its better presence and coverage here. This suggestion was given by the Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP).

A delegation from the FKJGP visited Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in this respect. The group was led by the organization's president.

FKJGP president Dundee Khongsit asked the state government to use BSNL to implement the mechanism because of its statewide network and coverage. He said the FKJGP would strongly advise the government of Meghalaya to nominate BSNL through its local office in Shillong, Meghalaya, for the implementation of their Vahan Suraksha state-backend AIS-140 project.

According to Dundee, the Nirbhaya Framework mandates that the process be implemented in every state. Additionally, it has set aside monies for two years of maintenance, starting from the day it introduced the same, totaling Rs 10.4 crore each year.

In light of the safety concerns of those travelling throughout the state, particularly women, the FKJGP argued that the deployment of a vehicle tracking system has become urgently necessary.

Stating that the job should be carried out by a company with both experience and a local presence, Khongsit said that the initiative must be carried out at the district and state levels by a PSU or other government organisation with a presence in the state, network coverage, and support infrastructure in Meghalaya.

He emphasised that BSNL is one of the leading national telecom service providers and that it already provides services to the state, noting that the Center has ordered that all agencies use its services.

The presence of BSNL is state-wide, he continued.  It has a Shillong-based state circle in Meghalaya. In order to reach the whole state, including the rural parts, BSNL has already installed 4th Generation (4G) towers all throughout the state.

Highlighting the fact that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved BSNL for integration with the VAHAN database for activation, registration, health checks, and alert updates, as necessary for the project's execution.

According to the FKJGP president, BSNL will carry out the project through a local telecom circle because it is a local company. This will help the state keep all of the funds, Goods and Services Tax (GST), and revenue generated by the project's implementation, which can then be used for the state's development and the benefit of its residents.

Having a local business will increase local jobs, he said. According to the Meghalaya government's personnel and administrative reforms, this would be able to provide work possibilities for Khasis, Jaintias, Garo, and members of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
