Mizoram is all set to introduce prepaid smart power meters from December as a part of the Centre's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.

Officials shared that the power department of the state has already commenced the work to replace old postpaid power meters with prepaid smart meters to improve operational efficiencies and financial sustainability. Like internet service providers, the Power and Electricity Department will be appointing an Advance Metering Infrastructure Service Provider using the Design Build Finance Operate Own and Transfer (DBFOOT) model.

According to a report published in the Mizoram Post, the department has received over Rs. 170 crores from the Centre for the installation of prepaid smart meters, which would be used by all consumers across the state from December.

According to the officials, the work of disconnecting and reconnecting will be performed from the control centers. This will be started after the setting up of the prepaid system.

The prepaid system will reduce the manpower required for billing. The system is expected to reduce billing errors and power loss, and increase revenue.

All electricity meters of consumers in Mizoram are to be replaced with pre-paid smart meters under the Central Government's flagship program.

The National Power Training Institute (NPTI) recently organized training for engineers of the Mizoram Power and Electricity Department in this regard.
