Purple Rice of Assam, known for benefitting diabetic patients is all set to find ways to the international market along with other popular varieties like Joha, Aijung and Black Rice. The rice is produced by the scientists of Regional Agricultural Research Centre, Titabor.

Recently, the health benefits of purple rice have received tremendous attention. The rice turns purple when it is cooked and has a slightly chewy and nutty flavour. It is also known as black rice.

There are around 40, 000 varieties of rice in this world. Labanya or purple/black rice is good for the diabetic patients due to its high fiber content and iron.

Labanya will be available on e-commerce platforms, Amazon and Flipkart, in the next week.

The yield of Labanya is higher compared to other rice varieties of Assam. The purple variety is expected to change the consumption pattern of diabetic patients around the world.

Assam has a favourable climate for production of rice. Joha and Aijung rice procured from the farmers of Kamrup and Nalbari districts were shipped to the United Arab Emirates at the initiative of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). There has been a commendable increase in the export of agricultural produce from the northeastern states in the last six months.
