Guwahati: Paying property tax is an important part of every citizen's duty. However, complexities have arisen in Guwahati, Assam as the administration has not updated its system to accommodate the online payment system.

Talking to Business North East, an official of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) informed that many of the online payments were not updated. "Customers have had to rush to the GMC office for updating of their payment status", this outlet.

Mouja offices, or a kind of administrative block where people pay land taxes, do not have an online payment option and customers have been observed making long queues outside the offices in Guwahati.

"Mouja officials have informed us that the online system would take time to be installed", a person queueing up outside an office told BNE.

These developments have been witnessed even as Assam has unveiled an urban services app - 'DoHUA Assam Unified Services' - to integrate all services and streamline online payments.

This integrated platform aims to simplify and enhance public access to online municipal services throughout the state.

Some of the facilities in the application include property tax, trade licenses, water connection, hoarding permission, cesspool request, film shooting, field booking, and hall bookings.

Earlier, the GMC had urged property owners to register online at www.gmcpropertytax.com - its own website. The website, which went live on October 1, 2022, also allows “self-assessment” which will enable users to procure property holding numbers. Previously, the municipal body had also advised paying electricity bills through the online portal.

"We will soon have all these facilities, but advise paying offline for now until all the technical aspects are finished", an official suggested.
