Railway connectivity boost in Sikkim

Guwahati: Indian Railways paves the way for new connectivity in Sikkim by linking it to the rest of the country.

According to the Railway Ministry, construction on the Sivok-Rangpo railway line is proceeding at full speed. Once completed, the project will provide new paths of wealth in the region.
The overall length of the Sivok–Rangpo rail line project is 44.96 kilometres. It would consist of 14 tunnels, the longest of which would be 5.27 kilometres long and the shortest of which would be 538 metres long.

As per the Railway Ministry, about half of all mining has been finished. The Sivok - Rangpo railway line will include five stations: Sivok, Riyang, Melli, Rangpo, and Teesta Bazaar.

Former Railway Minister Piyush Goyal stated in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question in September 2020 that the Sivok-Rangpo new line project was included in the 2008-09 Budget.
The length of the railway is 41.55 km in West Bengal and 3.41 km in Sikkim.

He stated that the most recent estimated project cost is Rs 4085 crore. Goyal had indicated that an expenditure of Rs 682 crore was incurred up to the month of March 2020, and an outlay of Rs 607 crore was authorised for the fiscal year 2020-21.
