Sikkim creating awareness in handloom sector.

Sikkim today held its first mega handloom expo to provide a direct marketing platform for weavers, sellers and buyers to converge and create awareness in the handloom sector .

The State Handloom Expo 2021-2022 began at the premises of the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Zero point, Gangtok.

Organised by the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms Department, Government of Sikkim under the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP) the expo is scheduled to be held till September 19.

The expo was inaugurated by Shri. Kado Tshering Bhutia, Hon'ble Advisor, Commerce & Industries Department, Government of Sikkim in the presence of Smt. Choden Gensapa, Deputy Director, Commerce & Industries and Officers & staff of Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms Department, Zero point.

The Chief Guest, Shri Kado Tshering Bhutia visited the stalls and interacted with the participants and expressed keen interest in the various displayed hand-woven products.

He said that this is the first Mega Handloom Expo that is being organized by the department providing a direct marketing platform for weavers, sellers and buyers to converge and create awareness in the handloom sector as an employment and income-generating industry.

He stated that the expo aims to facilitate and make local weavers aware through various programmes and to facilitate the consumer to purchase genuine handloom fabrics woven by local artisans.

He further expressed that it is the Government's vision and policy of creating a sustainable cottage industry in the State.

He anticipated that many people would throng the expo to encourage local weavers and pined his hope for the huge success of the event that stimulates trade of culture between different parts of the country.

60 stalls from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir and stalls of local weavers/SHGs from the State participated in the fair.

Local weavers, SHGs from different corners of the state exhibited their Handloom items for sale. These include Ekta Self Help Group, Chandmari, Multi Udyog Self Help Group, Gangtok, Sany Weavers, Self Help Group, Hee Bermoik, (West Sikkim) AMU Sakchum Self Help Group, Upper Dzong(North Sikkim), Goam Kitam Suntaley Cluster, Self Help Group,(South Sikkim), Trishna, Self Help Group, Panihouse, Gangtok and Self Help Group from Kabi, North Sikkim.

" This kind of expo gives a platform to the handlooms and handicraft industries to highlight the products made by weavers/ local people" an official said.

Products like carpets, saris, bed sheets various other fashionable blended items were highlighted at the fair. Participants put up their stalls for marketing as they grasped the opportunity to display their stocks in front of a huge number of visitors to tender their specific quality products and sell them.

" It was a mixture of culture and business " an official said.
