Guwahati: The Sittwe port, which would link Paletwa town in the Chin state of Myanmar with Mizoram, is ready for operation. The port at the mouth of the Kaladan River will give India's landlocked northeastern provinces an alternate option.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said "The Sittwe port has been constructed and is ready for operation. The Ministry of External Affairs of the Union keeps an eye on this initiative (MEA). We were given the responsibility of dredging and developing infrastructure, which we accomplished with great success."

"This initiative would be extremely beneficial to Mizoram and other states. In Myanmar, there is a slight problem with road connectivity; once it is resolved, everything would be available" as Sonowal said

A 117 km two-lane highway is being built close to Lawngtlai (Mizoram) to the Myanmar border in order to offer access to the Sittwe port in Myanmar.

According to the project, transportation will be by road from Kaletwa to the India-Myanmar border from Sittwe Port and by water from Kaletwa. The river Kaladan has a 2.9 metre tidal difference, and issues begin in the winter when the river's reservoirs are depleted of water. The project has enabled year-round river navigation.

According to Sonowal, on January 13, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the cornerstones for two significant projects when he opens the Maritime Skill Center for Northeast, which would increase capacity at Pandu Port in Guwahati.

The Ship Repair Facility at the Pandu multi-modal port and an elevated road connecting it to National Highway 27 in Guwahati are the other developments currently.
