The state government on Tuesday inaugurated a newly constructed market complex in South Sarania, Ulubari. The initiative aims to provide relief to street vendors amidst the Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) ongoing efforts to relocate them to designated vending zones.

Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, along with GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania, formally inaugurated the three-storied GMC market complex. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 8 crore, the structure houses 103 commercial units and is designed to offer vendors an organised and disruption-free space for conducting business.

According to GMC officials, the facility has been equipped with basic amenities to ensure comfort and convenience for traders, enabling them to operate in a more structured and secure environment.

Speaking to the media, Minister Baruah noted that the market inauguration coincides with the GMC council completing three years in office. “The long-awaited Ulubari market was inaugurated today. The project, initially proposed in 2014, faced delays due to unforeseen circumstances but has now been completed on time. This market will serve a crucial need for structured commercial space for both buyers and sellers in the Ulubari and South Sarania areas,” he said.

The minister also shared on the social media platform 'X' that shop spaces were allotted to 10 traders during the inauguration ceremony. He further announced that similar projects are underway in Beltola and Ganeshguri, with the Ganeshguri market nearing completion and set to be inaugurated soon. “This marks the beginning of a broader initiative. In total, three permanent markets are being developed to boost urban infrastructure and support local traders,” Baruah added.
