Subansiri Project: Still halfway to go

Guwahati: Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Mr. R.K. Singh, appreciated the work of NHPC and said hydropower projects are beneficial for the development of the area.

Singh today visited the project site of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project at Gerakamukh today. 

The minister witnessed key developments and components during his visit. These included the lowering of a 7m diameter 132-ton main inlet valve plug-in erection area (the heaviest transported equipment of the project), the generator barrel of India's largest hydro-generator (306MVA), and others.

Singh was briefed about the progress of works and the relentless efforts made by NHPC and contractors to complete the balance works of the dam even though rainfall had set in early this year. The project has been stalled from December 2011 to October 2019 due to protests by locals and many groups fearing safety and downstream impact.

Singh spoke on the benefits of generating clean and green hydel projects and the overall benefits that are ushered in through hydropower development.

Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Chowna Mein said he had a very fruitful discussion about the development of hydroelectric power projects in the State. He briefed him about the views of the Arunachal Pradesh government.

 Union Power Minister also had a meeting with the Power Developers and had a basin-wise discussion of the power projects assigned to the Central Public Sector Undertakings in a very positive environment. 

He said Singh instructed the CMDs of CPSUs for speedy development of the Power Projects assigned to them.

The Union Minister was accompanied by the Secretary, Ministry of Power, Govt. of India, Shri Alok Kumar, and Joint Secretary, Shri R M Rajendran.
