Telecom sector to see more reforms, says Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Union Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the telecom sector of India is assured to see more reforms in forthcoming years. He also said that the industry too will have to do its bit and reciprocate by improving the quality of service significantly.

The minister said that the journey of 5G is going to be very exciting and noted that many countries took multiple years to reach 40 percent to 50 percent coverage.

"But we are targeting a very aggressive timeline and the government has given a target of 80 percent coverage in a short time frame," he said.

Vaishnaw was addressing the Annual Flagship Event 2022 of the Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA), an apex industry body representing the Digital Infrastructure providers industry in India on September 14. Minister of State for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan was also present in the event.

Vaishnaw remarked that service quality parameters have to be significantly increased and the Telecom Department should approach the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in this regard. He advised the Telecom Department to send a new consultation paper to TRAI to significantly increase the quality-of-service parameters almost making it 3 times or 4 times of what it is in the present times.

The Minister further asked the industry including Telecom Operators and Infrastructure Providers to go full steam on improving the quality of services in the country, now that a number of reforms had been announced and more were lined up.
