Agartala: A major landslide in Assam’s Haflong–Jatinga section has disrupted railway connectivity in the Lumding–Badarpur Hill section, temporarily halting the movement of goods and passenger trains to Tripura and other parts of the Northeast.
The incident has prompted concern in Tripura, a state heavily dependent on railways for essential supplies.
NFR official said that the landslide, triggered by continuous rainfall and ongoing roadwork by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), severely damaged around 100 meters of railway track on Monday evening. Boulders and debris from a nearby slope just 15 meters away from the tracks were dislodged onto the rail line, leading to the cancellation of nine trains by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
Despite the disruption, the Tripura government has reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for panic.
A senior government official stated, “We have adequate stock of essential commodities. Rice reserves can last for 86 days, wheat for 56 days, pulses are in sufficient quantity, and there is a 4-day stock of LPG.”
However, fuel supplies remain a concern, with stock estimated to last only up to Friday.

“We are monitoring the situation closely. Coordination is ongoing with NFR and other agencies to ensure timely restoration of connectivity,” the official added.
A high-level meeting held on June 24, attended by the Assam Chief Secretary, NFR General Manager, and NHAI officials, finalized a coordinated restoration plan. Over 25 heavy machinery units and 200 laborers have been deployed to expedite the work.
The NFR said efforts are underway on a war footing and rail services are expected to resume by Saturday, subject to weather conditions and progress on the ground.
