Guwahati: Assam has signed seven Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) with investors worth Rs. 2,050 crores, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday.

The agreements were signed between Commissioner of Industry and Commerce, Oinam Singh, and representatives of companies including Indian Hotel Company Limited (Taj Kaziranga), Bhavya Srishti Udyog Pvt Ltd, Galaxy Infra Creations Pvt Ltd, KD Iron and Steel Company, Maxim Infrastructure Pvt Ltd, Topcem India LLP and Flexcom Plast Pvt Ltd. These industries will generate over 6,000 job opportunities, according to the Chief Minister.

Speaking on this development, Biswa Sarma highlighted the important role played by the state's Industrial & Investment Policy of Assam (IIPA) 2019 in attracting mega investment and said that 21 proposals have been approved by the Assam Cabinet, out of which, 14 MoUs were previously signed with leading players such as PepsiCo India, Star Cement, and Jericho Chemicals, reflecting a cumulative investment of Rs. 13,364 crores and the creation of 17,800 jobs.

The Industrial & Investment Policy of Assam (IIPA) 2019 was amended in 2023 to attract mega investments worth at least Rs 100 crore.

Furthermore, CM Sarma said that the new North East Industrial Policy by the Union Government will synergize opportunities for industrial development in Assam. "Investors should leverage the favorable industrial policies at both the central and state levels to establish thriving businesses in the region", he said.

Earlier this month, the union cabinet approved the Uttar Poorva Transformative Industrialization Scheme, 2024, with a budget of Rs 10,037 crore. The scheme aims to develop industries and generate employment in the North East Region (NER).

In addition to industrial development, Sarma said the government is also trying to create employment opportunities across sectors such as agriculture, horticulture, poultry farming, and trade.
