Guwahati: Assam is on the brink of potentially hosting an Apple iPhone manufacturing unit, a development that could bolster the state's economy significantly.

Tata Electronics, following its recent acquisition of Winstron, a former Indian iPhone manufacturer, is currently engaged in advanced discussions with the Assam government to solidify the agreement.

Sources indicate that the prospective iPhone manufacturing facility could be established within the premises of the Jagiroad Paper Mill campus.

Recently, a high-level delegation from Tata Group held talks with Assam government officials to deliberate on matters like land allocation and power availability for the potential facility.

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had said earlier of bringing an Apple Mobile factory in Assam.

During a recent event in Bengaluru, he expressed his desire to create an abundance of job opportunities within the state, aimed at enticing those who have migrated for work.

While Apple's partner, Foxconn Technology Group, has already injected $700 million into a site in Karnataka to bolster local production, industry insiders suggest that considering Assam as a potential location could further amplify Apple's production capabilities in India.

In recent times, India has witnessed a surge in Apple iPhone production, with locally manufactured models including the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 hitting the market.

Established players such as Foxconn and Wistron have been integral to this production surge, but Tata Electronics is reportedly poised to enter the arena by taking over Wistron's operations in the country.

Should the blueprint to establish Apple's mobile factory in Assam come to fruition, it holds the promise of ushering in a significant economic upswing for the state.

This move could potentially generate thousands of jobs, contributing to India's stature as a foremost producer of Apple iPhones.
