Guwahati: Assam has emerged as the top-performing state (A2 category) in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana during the Kharif season of 2022. The Director of the Department of Agriculture, Anant Lal Gyani IAS, noted that the state's performance has improved compared to previous years, particularly in areas such as claim disbursement and claiming.

Assam is among 14 states in the A2 category, while the larger states fall under the A1 category. The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana was launched in 2016, and during Kharif 2021, 6.03 lakh farmers enrolled, with 1.72 lakh farmers paying a premium of Rs 94 crores.

However, from Kharif 2022, the state increased the farmer's involvement by raising their premium share from Re.1 to Rs.100 for the first one hectare, resulting in an decreased enrollment of 2.62 lakh farmers.

In 2019-2020, the state's total premium paid to insurance companies was Rs. 238 crores.
