Shillong: The Meghalaya government is catalysing the growth of local weaves and handicrafts as another means of promoting tourism and attracting tourists from across the country and around the world.

While the state has already set up The Meghalayan Age outlet in New Delhi to showcase local products -- which include agricultural produce, handloom, pottery and cane and bamboo articles – the government recently organised the Ateliers Meghalaya Awards 2023 to further encourage artisans and local entrepreneurs.

The Meghalaya Department of Tourism and The Meghalayan Age Limited collaborated to present the awards.

The Ateliers Meghalaya Awards 2023 recognised exceptional talent across various creative domains, with a total of four categories. Each award recipient was honoured with a certificate of recognition and a cheque of Rs. 50,000.

Minister of Tourism Paul Lyngdoh emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting the growth of tourism and artistry in Meghalaya.

“Today marks a historic occasion as gather here to celebrate the remarkable achievements of young entrepreneurs whose works serve as an inspiration to all. It is my vision to see Meghalaya’s textiles have a brand ambassador and a signature outfit that will further boost Meghalaya tourism. We must prioritize these soft skills of Meghalaya, as the talent we possess knows no bounds. I extend my heartfelt salute to all craftsmen whose artistry enriches our culture. Rest assured, we will spare no effort in creating a global platform for the talented craftsmen of Meghalaya to showcase their artistry to the world,” said Lyngdoh.
“One of the core tenets of the Ateliers Program is connecting and recognising the hidden talents and practices that lie within the heart of Meghalaya. It is through this synergy between artisans and entrepreneurs that we are able to showcase the uniqueness of our products and the depth of our knowledge to the world,” said Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
