GAIL's Rs 3,992 crore pipeline links Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar: Here's what you should know

Guwahati: GAIL (India) Limited, a PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, has completed the construction of a 718km pipeline connecting Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam. The pipeline was constructed for Rs 3,992 crore and marks a significant milestone in enhancing the energy infrastructure in the Northeast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Barauni-Guwahati Natural Gas Pipeline, seen as a transformative project linking the Northeast Region to the national gas grid remotely from Jorhat.

The pipeline is designed to supply natural gas to nine geographical areas covering 31 districts across 3 states through authorized city gas distribution (CGD).

The 24-inch diameter pipeline can transport around 2.5 million metric standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD) of natural gas and is expected to serve domestic, industrial, commercial, and automobile sectors in the Northeastern region.

Through the city gas distribution (CGD) networks, approximately 2.9 million households will receive piped natural gas in the 9 geographical areas with over 614 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations planned in this area.

Additionally, the implementation of BGPL, the project generated both direct and indirect employment opportunities. Approximately 1.58 million man-days were created during the construction phase, and around 70,000 man-days are expected during the operation and maintenance phase.
