Guwahati: At least six flights from different airlines were diverted and rains crashed a ceiling at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati on Sunday evening. No injuries have been reported.

Social media was agog with videos of the damage caused to the airport due to the rains on Sunday. One video showed water pouring through the false ceiling and another one showed a ceiling crashing and passengers were heard screaming.

Air India and Indigo flights were diverted following the heavy downpour and damage to the airport. Airport authorities said that roof outlets got heavily overflowed and water was instilled inside the terminal building. “Outside the terminal building, a small portion of ceiling fell open due to pressure of water and wind”, the Chief Airport Officer (CAO) Utpal Baruah informed Business North East.

Baruah added that an approach road leading to the airport was blocked due to the uprooting of trees. However, operations have resumed given improving weather conditions.

The Adani-controlled airport has major expansion plans afoot but safety concerns today will entail a lot more work. The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport (LGBI) was officially handed over to the Adani Group on October 8, 2021.
