Guwahati: Guwahati is set to transform into a "fully green transport system" within the next two years with 500 EV buses, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on January 1 before he flagged off 200 state-of-the-art air-conditioned electric buses manufactured by Tata and Olectra that will ply in the city and on its outskirts.

"These buses are equipped with advanced facilities catering to specially-abled passengers and bolstered surveillance through CCTV systems aimed at enhancing women's safety across Guwahati and its adjoining areas", an official informed Business North East.

These cutting-edge electric buses will ply to Chandrapur, Dharapur, Mirza, AIIMS Guwahati, Sualkuchi, Baihata Chariali, and Jagiroad, improving connectivity between Guwahati and its neighbouring towns. "The deployment of the buses aligns with the state government's commitment to fostering a green environment, emphasizing the urgency to combat climate change", said an official.

The newly introduced electric buses are complemented by charging infrastructure strategically placed at Runagar, Betkuchi, Mirza, Baihata Chariali, and Jagiroad to ensure their seamless and efficient operation. In addition to the electric buses, the government is set to introduce e-vehicles into public transport, with subsidies being offered to expedite the adoption of electric vehicles across the segment.

Biswa Sarma, addressing the gathering, highlighted the global urgency of addressing climate change. He said that the state cabinet on August 20, 2021, decided to introduce 100 CNG buses and 200 e-buses. In line with the decision, 100 CNG buses were introduced in 2023 and on January 1, 2024. A total of Rs 261 crores has been invested so far.

"The government is diligently working towards reducing carbon emissions to zero by 2070", Sarma said. He also urged private entities to participate in setting up charging stations, assuring government support for such initiatives. Furthermore, he called upon all stakeholders to collaborate in the phased elimination of fossil fuel-driven vehicles from Guwahati.
