Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway's Railway Protection Force (RPF) has devised an innovative technique to fight against the rising number of mobile phone thefts aboard trains and railway premises.
Passengers can now use the Rail Madad App to report stolen or misplaced mobile phones, prompting a quick reaction from NFR's Cyber Crime Wing, officials have informed.
This project, in partnership with the Department of Telecommunications' Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, marks a significant milestone in enhancing security measures across Assam's telecom service networks. The access plan for CEIR was carefully developed in collaboration with local law enforcement authorities in Guwahati.
Following lengthy consideration and reasoning, RPF/NFR was granted access to the CEIR portal as a pilot project for Assam. To make this task easier, a unique user ID and password were assigned.
Operations began on April 22, 2024tal. As of May 9, 2024, RPF and NFR have successfully blocked 36 mobiles via the CEIR portal, with 15 mobiles being activated and traceability reports received. Seven of the traced mobiles have been traced, resulting in the arrest of three criminals and one receiver.
Notably, NFR was the first zonal railway of Indian Railways to receive access to the CEIR facility, establishing a precedent for increased security measures across the railway network.
Meanwhile, plans are planned for RPF and NFR to expand the use of the CEIR facility throughout all states under its jurisdiction.
