New Delhi: Japan has launched its electronic visa (eVISA) system for tourists who want to visit the Asian country for a short duration, effective April 1, 2024, with a focus on improving tourism accessibility. Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in an official statement, mentioned that the facility is also available for Indians.

The eVISA system represents a significant advancement in Japan's tourism infrastructure, catering to Indian travelers who can now apply for visas online, eliminating the need for paper-based applications and embassy visits.

Residents in India can conveniently navigate the application process via the JAPAN eVISA website. The program has also been extended to countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, and the United States.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the system aims to enhance security measures and visa processing efficiency. This move promotes tourism exchanges and cultural exploration between India and Japan, offering travelers a seamless journey from application to arrival.

According to the Ministry’s website, a “single-entry short-term stay visa for the purpose of tourism for a period of up to 90 days” will be issued. “Electronic visas will be issued to those who applied through JAPAN eVISA website.” For a long-term stay, one has to submit an application to the Japanese Embassy, Consulate General or Consular office with the jurisdiction his/her country of origin.
